Obstacles and Deliverance

Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. Joshua 6 : 1,2

The opening verses of Joshua chapter 6 are very contrasting. Verse 1 shows us the obstacle that lay in front of the Children of Israel. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness where an entire generation perished - the Israelites finally managed to cross the river Jordan and are now on the precipice of inheriting their promised land.

However, the first verse of Chapter 6 paints an uninviting picture. The doors of Jericho were shut. After all the trials and struggles, Israelites were now looking at a closed-door in front of them. It is possible, some of them may have dreamt that once they crossed Jordan, it would have just been easy roads and open doors. But what stood before them were high walls and a giant closed gate.

Oftentimes, we come across similar situations in our life. When we feel that we are just about to inherit the promises of God, we find ourselves facing an impassable red sea, a walled Jericho, or a roaring Goliath.

But the word of the Lord remains true, especially in these circumstances. Verse 2 reveals what God had in mind. Even though Jericho was shut and walled up, God had already delivered it into the hands of Joshua and his people. And through praise and faith, as they walk in the words of the Lord, those walls would crumble down even without them lifting a finger.

The enemy brings in obstacles in our lives to deter our faith. The closer we are to inheriting the promise, the bigger the obstacle becomes. If you find yourself in such situations,

  1. Be glad, because God has already delivered the inheritance in our hands

  2. Obey his word, as that is the sure way of deliverance

  3. Lift up your praise and watch those walls come crumbling down

Our plans cannot accomplish God's will. But when we surrender our will to God's plans, He can remove any hindrance the enemy may bring.

The enemy might shut the gates to discourage us, but the promise of God for us is that he has set an open door that no one can shut. Stay strong and you will receive all that the Lord has promised us.

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Revelations 3:8
