True Freedom

By the grace of God, we were able to celebrate the 75th year of Independence of India. Looking at the current turmoil in so many countries around the world, with people fleeing for their lives. It is indeed a blessing of God to live in a free country.

But for any child of God, there is another Independence day they get to celebrate. It is the day on which their sins were forgiven. Their eyes were opened and their lives were set free.

But just as in National independence, a citizen is not just left to their own free will after receiving freedom. Countries that managed to overthrow their tyrannical rulers fall into dictatorship once again, if they are unable to establish a proper government within the first few years of freedom. The current affairs of the world around us stand as witnesses to this point.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13

As it is in the natural, so in the spiritual. A believer who has received the freedom that Christ provided with his blood, must come under the constitution of the Kingdom of God. Salvation is not an excuse to run our own lives but rather to be lead by the governance of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. John 8:34

Man fell when he chose his own path instead of what God had established. Salvation does not cure our infallibility if we continue to live the same way as we did before.

An entire generation of the Israelites perished in the wilderness, not because they were still under the bondage of Egypt externally. But they were still slaves internally.

A change in physical location had not changed their mental states. They still longed for the pleasures of Egypt and had conveniently forgotten how the whips felt on their backs. This lead to them growing in complaining and unbelief. They would have preferred to have been free citizens in Egypt rather than heirs of God's promised land.

Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. Hebrews 3:16 - 19

We tend to behave the same on occasions. We are still drawn to the pleasures of our pasts despite all the suffering and pain it had cost us. The blood of Jesus has washed away our sins, but it cannot prevent us from rolling in the mud again. That is up to us.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery Galatians 5:1

Apostle Paul says that it is up to every believer to choose to continue in this freedom that the grace of God has provided us so freely. Better yet, we should surrender our freedom into the hands of God and let his Holy Spirit lead us. Only then will we come into the true knowledge of His Son for only through him can we experience true freedom.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31,32

Happy Independence day.
